Boys Tuition Free Program
In 2007, the Boys Tuition-Free Program was created to make ballet accessible to boys in the Philadelphia and suburban areas. It is designed to enhance athletic skills, increase flexibility, build muscle strength and help develop coordination. Registration in at least one ballet class is mandatory in order to participate in the program.
Ballet teaches discipline and produces superior core strength, and is the first discipline of all dance forms. The unique and athletic energy of boys is given proper attention in any class. When they advance sufficiently, boys will learn partnering skills, which will be necessary for them to forge a career in dance or any college level classes. Learning how to use their larger muscle groups to attain male technique, including jumps and turns specific to their gender are of constant focus.
Participants in the program also enjoy performance opportunities, including an invitation to audition for PDT’s A Philadelphia Nutcracker. Our male students have played parts in this production year after year, learning theatrical and performance skills along with the athleticism ballet demands. Boys are often cast in the roles of Soldiers, Bon Bons, Candy Canes, and participating as mischievous young men in the Party Scene.
